What is an Ascender? An ascender is a mechanical device used for ascending on a rope. One such device is a Jumar, named after the Swiss factory 'Jümar'. The device's name also leads to the term Jumaring for the process of using an ascending device. Other terms for this process include ascending, prusiking and jugging.

Automatic Belay Units

Auto belays are a great way to improve safety and increase traffic for your ropes course, climbing wall, or zip line launch. Auto belay units allow staff to operate several belay stations with only one staff. They can prep the next climber while the first climber is in route. This greatly speeds up time and throughput. One staff or guide can be operating three or more automatic belay devices.  Amazing new technologies are emerging in magnetic brakes, two way fall arrest. and return pulleys. Mechanical and automatic belay systems are becoming popular in climbing gyms, ropes courses, portable climbing walls, and zip line access. Since the recall of the MSA Red Point Descenders, Extreme Engineering has had the only system, belay in a box, openly available to the US market: expensive to buy and service. BELAY DEVICES

Belay Devices and Descenders are essentially friction brakes. They are indispensable for controlling the rope, whether one is descending, stopping a fall, or protecting a move.  Devices can be used on single ropes (one strand for rappelling or belaying), as well as on double ropes (two strands for rappelling or belaying).

Belay Devices: Simple meets smooth

A belay device should be simple and easy to use. The rope should run smoothly through the device so your attention is always on the climber, not on tangled or twisted rope. There are dozens of belay devices on the market. Some are simple friction devices, like stitch plates, tubes, or figure 8's that have no moving parts. An alternative is an automatic belay device that works on a camming principle. Stitch (or belay) plates are flat pieces of metal with holes for one or two bights of rope. Usually the openings are two different sizes. Plates are easy to use, but they aren't smooth rope handlers. Tubes are a modern reincarnation of the traditional belay plate. They have two equal sized holes, so you can switch from single to double rope belays with ease.

CARABINERS

Carabiners

Carabiners are widely used in sports requiring ropework, such as rock climbing, slacklining, caving, canyoning, and sailing, and in industrial rope access work, such as construction or window cleaning.  Carabiners used in sports tend to be lighter than carabiners used in industry. For recreational climbing, almost all carabiners are made from 7075 aluminum and are treated to a T6 temper (solution treated and then artificially aged). For rope rescues and industrial carabiner uses, where the weight of the carabiner is not an important factor and larger working loads are encountered, steel carabiners are commonly used.
